Farm Assessment Program for Bona fide Farmers

The Farm Assessment Program for Bona fide Farmers provides farmers with tax relief on the land used for farming,   If you are interested in this program, you may also want to apply for a Marked Gasoline and Marked Diesel Oil Permit.

Who is eligible?

You may qualify for the program if you are:

  • an individual who owns a farm and is:
    • actively engaged in farming; and
    • earns at least $10,000 or 25 per cent of its gross annual income from farming.
  • a partnership or corporation that owns a farm and is:
    • registered in the province; and
    • actively engaged in farming; and
    • earns at least $10,000 or 25 per cent of its gross annual income from farming.
  • an individual that owns a farm and is registered in the Future Farmer Program.
  • a partnership, or corporation that owns a farm where one or more of the principals are registered in the Future Farmer Program.
  • a widow or widower of a bona fide farmer.
  • an individual who in the year immediately preceding the current assessment year operated a farm, but who in the current year does not operate a farm by reason of illness or disability.

What if there are multiple bona fide farmers on my farm?

If your farm is operated by more than one person, the Taxation and Property Records Division may recognize one or more individuals as a bona fide farmer, provided the property is registered to that individual either as:

  • a joint tenant; or
  • a tenant in common; or
  • in the name of the applicant, and
  • the person applying meets the qualifications of a bona fide farmer.

How do I apply?

If you wish to apply to the Farm Assessment Program for Bona fide Farmers, you must complete an Application for Bona fide Farmer Status Property Assessment form and return it to Taxation and Property Records as directed on the form.

Please note that you have the option of submitting a Declaration of Income for Bona Fide Farmer Status (Déclaration de revenus pour statut de véritable exploitant agricole) form rather than providing copies of income tax returns, schedules, and notice of assessments as directed on the form.
