Withdrawal Management Program
Call 1-888-299-8399 to request admission.
What is withdrawal management?
When you want to stop using alcohol or drugs, withdrawal management provides a safe, supportive and medically supervised environment to help you withdraw/detox as either an inpatient or outpatient.
- Inpatient withdrawal management: You may have to stay in the Provincial Addictions Treatment Facility (inpatient) while you withdraw. There, you will receive care from a physician and addiction nurses. The length of your stay is based on your needs.
- Outpatient withdrawal management: If you are not at risk for harmful withdrawal symptoms, you may be able to stay at home and have your withdrawal monitored once a day by a trained addictions nurse at either the treatment facility (out-patient) or at an addiction services office.
- Opioid Replacement Therapy: If you depend on opioid drugs (such as heroin, codeine, morphine, hydromorphone, oxycodone), methadone or suboxone treatment might be right for you. Call 1-888-299-8399 to make an appointment to be screened by clinical staff for admission to the Opioid Replacement Therapy Program. The program is a provincial service with clinics available in Montague, Charlottetown and Summerside through Addiction Services.
How can I get withdrawal/detox treatment?
Call 1-888-299-8399 (toll-free) to request admission. Your name will be entered in an electronic wait list. If you require inpatient withdrawal treatment, you will be called for admission when a bed is available. With your consent, support will be offered to members of your family.
How long does it take to be admitted?
Depending on the level of urgency, you may be admitted that day. Otherwise you may wait between one and three days. At present, five people are admitted each day.
When will I finish my withdrawal treatment?
During your withdrawal treatment, you will learn about the nature of your addiction. You will also be encouraged to take more steps in your recovery after you complete your withdrawal.
Your withdrawal treatment is complete when you are physically stable and mentally alert enough to make a choice about the next step in your recovery.
Will I need more treatment after my withdrawal?
The withdrawal program will not address the cause of your addiction. Other addiction recovery programs, such as attending acupuncture sessions, Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. will help you make your recovery successful.
