Provincial Heritage Places Incentive

If you own a designated heritage property outside Charlottetown or Summerside, you may be eligible for assistance for some of the approved costs to conserve the building. Contact the municipal planning office directly, if your property is located in Charlottetown or Summerside.

Am I eligible to apply for provincial heritage places incentive?

You must be the owner of the designated heritage property to be eligible for funding.  Work must be undertaken after the grant application is approved and all necessary permits are granted. Work completed prior to your application is not eligible.  Please contact the Heritage Officer prior to beginning any work on a designated heritage place to determine if your proposed project is eligible and if it requires a Heritage permit.

What costs are eligible for approval?

Fees paid for professional advice are eligible expenses. You are encouraged to obtain professional advice, e.g. architectural, engineering or specialized consultants.

Other eligible project costs include but are not limited to:

  • Structural repair, building stabilization and moisture control
  • Repair and energy upgrading of existing original windows and doors
  • Exterior restoration including:
    • Conservation of original, existing material;
    • Restoration of deteriorated material; and
    • Reconstruction of missing components (Historic documentation of such components must be attached.)
  • Exterior historic painting
  • Installation of new windows that match original windows in detail, operation and material but only if the original windows no longer exist or are irreparable. (Historic documentation regarding the original windows and/or a detailed report outlining the condition of deteriorated windows must be attached.)

How much money is available?

You may be eligible for 25 per cent of approved costs to a maximum of $3000. Volunteer labour and donated materials and equipment cannot be included as part of the costs.

You may receive grants from other sources including other government grants; however, total provincial government funding must not exceed 50 per cent of the cost of the project.

Applications are approved on first-come, first-serve basis according to funds available.

Can I apply more than one time?

A minimum three years must elapse between grant applications.

What other requirements do I need to consider?

  1. Once funding is approved and you submit a letter stating that work has begun, 50 per cent of the grant will be forwarded.
  2. You are required to provide photographs of work-in-progress as well as the finished project.
    1. The department has the right to inspect the building before and during the work period.
    2. You must commit to completing the project by a specific date.
  3. Balance of the payment will be issued once you confirm the work is completed and all invoices are paid.

Please Note: The department is not liable for any claims, demands or causes of action that may be made against him/her because of any act or omission by the applicant, or the applicant’s employees or agents, resulting at or from the building site.
