Prince Edward Island Teacher's Certificate Application

You must hold a valid Prince Edward Island Teacher’s Certificate in order to teach in PEI.

What do I need to apply for an Academic PEI Teacher's Certificate?

Please include the following items with your completed application form:

  • Proof of identity such as a copy of your birth certificate or passport
  • Proof of eligibility to work in Canada such as a copy of your SIN card or SIN confirmation letter
  • A current Criminal Background Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen (not older than 3 months)
  • Official transcript mailed directly to the Registrar from each post-secondary institution attended (faxed, emailed, hand-delivered, or student-issued copies will not be accepted)
  • Proof of completion of a recognized Pre-service Professional Teacher Education program
    • If you completed your professional teacher education program in a jurisdiction outside PEI, provide proof that you were first certified to teach in that jurisdiction.  Provide a copy of your teacher’s license and a Statement of Professional Standing mailed directly from the regulator in that jurisdiction even if you never taught there.
  • If you taught outside PEI, a Statement of Professional Standing must be mailed directly from the Regulator from each jurisdiction where you have taught or have been licensed to teach
  • Appropriate fee and any additional applicable fees (see below)

If you are not eligible to work in Canada, a PEI Teacher’s Certificate will not be issued.  However, if you qualify for certification, a Conditional Letter of Eligibility will be issued until you provide proof of authorization to work in Canada to the Registrar.

Is it necessary to translate my documents?

You must submit original documents in the language in which they were issued. If documents are written in a language other than English or French, you must submit an official translation by an accredited translator along with the original document.

Is there a language proficiency requirement to teach in PEI?

A satisfactory level of language proficiency in English or French is a condition of certification required to teach in public schools in PEI. The Registrar may request proof of language proficiency if you have completed one or more educational levels in a language other than English or French.

Is my PEI certification valid outside PEI?

No, your PEI teacher’s license is valid only in PEI.  If you are a certified PEI teacher planning to teach in another jurisdiction, you will require a Statement of Professional Standing issued by the PEI Registrar.

A Statement of Professional Standing attests that your PEI Teacher’s Certificate is in good standing and that your license to teach has never been suspended, revoked, or cancelled.  A Statement of Professional Standing is required by the regulatory body in each jurisdiction.

Is there a fee to process my credentials?

There is a fee to evaluate credentials for a PEI Teacher’s Certificate.  The fee is $125 for applicants, and there is a $25 fee to have a Statement of Professional Standing forwarded to another jurisdiction.

You can pay fees by cheque or money order, payable to the Minister of Finance, in cash at the Office of the Registrar, or by credit card over the phone, email or fax by using a payment form.  Fees are non-refundable unless the application is withdrawn and in the event that no staff time has been invested in processing the application.

How is a certificate level assigned?

Your certification level is assigned according to Teacher Certification and Standards Board policies and based on the academic credentials you provide, including all official transcripts and copies of degrees and diplomas. You should take care to provide all official supporting academic documentation to ensure you are assigned a certificate level commensurate with your academic qualifications.  Find out more about PEI Teacher’s Certificate levels.

How long will it take to process my application?

Applications are processed on a first in, first out basis. Please allow three (3) weeks from the date you submit all required documentation to the Office of the Registrar.

What is the status of my application?

You may email registrar@gov.pe.ca to request an update on the status of your application.

Please include Application Status Update Request in the subject line and your full name and the nature of your application in the body.

Do I need to renew my PEI Teacher's Certificate?

You do not need to renew your Teacher’s Certificate unless you hold an Interim Teacher’s Certificate that has expired, or you were initially issued a Letter of Eligibility.  In either case, complete this renewal form and send it to the Office of the Registrar.  There is no fee to renew a certificate.
