School infrastructure renewal
The Province is investing in building new schools, expanding schools in communities that are experiencing unprecedented growth in student population and renovating schools to enhance learning environments.
Partnerships with the Province, school boards, communities and other stakeholders are helping to modernize buildings, increase school capacity, and enhance learning opportunities for all.

Sherwood Elementary
Project Overview
A new Sherwood Elementary School (K-6) was announced in the Fall of 2018. The new school is under construction on the same site as the existing school.
The project will help meet the needs of a growing population. This school serves several communities from eastern Charlottetown to Brackley Beach to Grand Tracadie. There will be space for 650 students once opened.

What are some special features of the school?
The new Sherwood Elementary School will be the first fully electric, net zero ready school in PEI. Energy efficiency features include:
- solar panel system
- geothermal energy system
- electric vehicle charging stations for vehicles
The new school will provide a modern teaching and learning environment that supports diverse learning styles, including:
- Maker’s space for project-based learning
- Classroom walls open to each other, expanding spaces for team teaching and group activities
- More space for physical education and recreation with a new soccer field

Stratford High School
Project Overview
The new Stratford High School (10-12) was announced in the Fall of 2019. The school will serve 750 students on 34 acres of provincially owned land in the Town of Stratford’s Community Campus.

What are some special features of the school?
- This is the first high school in the Town of Stratford, one of the fastest growing areas in PEI. Anticipating further population growth, a dedicated area of the school property is reserved for additional classroom space in the future.
- Energy efficient features will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including:
- geothermal energy system
- solar panel system
- electric vehicle charging stations for vehicles and buses
- New trees and plants to sequester carbon over time
- A flexible design will support diverse learning styles, including:
- An outdoor classroom
- Breakout spaces for smaller group study
- Space for trades, sciences and performing arts
- A maker’s space for interdisciplinary exploration
- Three athletic fields

École Évangéline School
Project Overview
A renovation of École Évangéline School (K-12) was initially announced in the Fall of 2019. Then the school was damaged by Hurricane Fiona. In the Fall of 2022, the Province announced it would be building a new École Évangéline School on the existing school’s property.
A new school will meet population growth in the area. It will accommodate 225 school-aged students, 56 preschool children in the Early Years Center and 15 students attending before and after care school programs.

What are some special features of the school?
École Évangéline School is a French-language school. The new school will be co-located with an Acadian and Francophone arts and cultural centre, a public library, and an expanded early years centre. Co-location will strengthen connections between children, community and culture.
The new school will be fully electric and will be a Net Zero Ready school, featuring energy efficient systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
When will it be completed?
The new school’s design was unveiled on December 9, 2024.

École François-Buote
Project Overview
An expansion of Ecole François-Buote (K-12), the Early Years Center (EYC) and Community Spaces was announced in the Fall of 2021. The project will provide additional spaces for students, and infants and children attending Community and Early Years Centre programs. The project supports a growing school population.

What are some special features of the project?
École François-Buote is a French-language school in Charlottetown. An addition and renovations to the existing school and early years centre will allow spaces for more students, infants and children.
The new spaces will be constructed above rising sea level models predicted for 2100. This will prevent future damage caused by high water levels or storms.
Other features include:
- Four additional classrooms for K-6 with a music room, gym for elementary students, resource area, youth worker and staff space
- Four additional classrooms for 7-12, with a culinary arts area, guidance counsellor space, and breakout rooms for learning spaces
- Activity room for EYC and community use
- Expanded meeting rooms for community use
A two-storey addition for the early years centre and grades 7-12 is under consideration.

East Royalty Elementary School
Project Overview
A new elementary school (K-6) in Charlottetown’s East Royalty area was announced in the Fall of 2024. The new school will be built next to the current L.M. Montgomery Elementary School.
The project will meet the needs of a growing population and serve the L.M. Montgomery catchment area. There will be space for 650 students once it opens.

Project Overview
A school expansion and renovation to Queen Charlotte Intermediate School for grades 7-9 was announced in Fall 2024.
The project will add more learning space for students and meet the needs of the growing population. This school serves students in the Charlottetown area.

- Expansion to the cafeteria.
- Modernized Infrastructure:
- Updated washrooms, new flooring, and lockers.
- Energy-efficient LED lighting.
- Replacement of interior and exterior doors.
- Partial roof replacement for long-term durability.
- A new dust collector system in the trades area.

Stratford Intermediate School
Project Overview
A new intermediate school in Stratford was announced in the fall of 2023 and the Province accelerated the project in the 2024 Fall Capital Budget.
The new school will be in the Stratford Community Campus near the new high school. The project will meet the needs of a growing population in the Town of Stratford area. Once complete it will accommodate 750 students.

Project Overview
A renovation to Rosebank’s Westisle Composite High School was announced in Fall 2024.
This project will upgrade the facility to ensure it continues to serve as a functional and effective educational space for future generations. This school serves most communities in West Prince County.
