Your Library Card
If you are a resident of Prince Edward Island, you can get a PEI Public Library Card for free. With a library card, you can borrow any item in our collection, use our public access computers and access our digital collections from your home.
How do I get a library card?
You can apply for a PEI Public Library Card:
- In person at your local library; or
- Online through our online application form
What do I need to sign up?
When you sign up for a PEI Public Library Card, you will need to provide your name and contact information. Depending on the applicant, the following steps may also be required:
- If you are under 16, a parent/legal guardian will need to register on your behalf
- If you apply online, your library card will be mailed to your home. In order to activate the card, visit or call any public library branch
- If you do not live on PEI, you may be be eligible for a temporary library card. Contact any public library branch for details
What if I lose my library card or it expires?
- If you lose your library card, contact any public library branch for a replacement
- Library cards automatically expire every 2 years. If your card has expired, contact any public library branch to renew it or you can renew it yourself under your account on our online catalogue.
What can I borrow with my library card?
- Most library items can be borrowed for 3 weeks
- Magazines and high-demand items can be borrowed for 1 week
- You can borrow up to 40 items on your library card at one time
- You can borrow up to 20 e-Books and e-Audiobooks at one time
- Items can be returned to any of our 25 public library branches
How do I request or renew items on my library card?
To request or renew items on your library card, there are a variety of options:
- Online through the library's online catalogue. You will need to log into My Account using your library card number (which is located on the back of your card) and your PIN (personal identification number)
- By contacting any public library branch
- You can have up to 50 requests on your library card at one time and 25 requests on e-Books and e-Audiobooks
- You can renew your items up to 3 times; however, you will not be able to renew items if another library user has requested the item
What is my PIN?
PIN stands for personal identification number. You will need a unique PIN in order to access your account on the library's online catalogue and some of our online resources - such as Overdrive/Libby. You can reset your PIN yourself through the online catalogue or you may contact any public library.
What if I return items late or they are lost/damaged?
- The PEI Public Library Service is fine-free - meaning that we do not charge for overdue items. However, we encourage you to return your materials on time.
- There are replacement charges applied to library accounts when items are lost or damaged. These charges are removed if the item is returned or found.
