Federal Student Loan Repayment

You must begin to repay the federal portion of your student loan six months after the last date you attended school on a full-time basis.  The first six months after your last day of full-time study is referred to as your “non-repayment period” or “grace period.”

Where do I find out how much I owe and what my payment will be?

Someone from the National  Student Loans Service Centre will attempt to contact you in advance by phone or mail to discuss your repayment options; but it is your responsibility to contact National Student Loans Service Centre if they have not contacted you.

Visit CanLearn to learn about repayment options, or to find contact information to call and discuss your repayment plan. You can use this website to set up your NSLSC online account to:

  • Track your payments 24/7;
  • Get updated balance information;
  • Apply for repayment assistance; and
  • Keep your contact information up to date.

What if I am having difficulty making my payment each month?

If you think you will not be able to make your regular monthly payments, or you have already missed a loan payment, contact the National Student Loans Service Centre to discuss your options. There are programs that may be able to help you get your payments back on track, e.g. the Repayment Assistance Program or Severe Permanent Disability Benefit.
