Primary Mathematics Assessment

The Primary Math Assessment (PMA) measures math knowledge and skills learned up to the end of Grade 3.

You can review detailed guidelines and policies in the Primary Math Assessment Administration Guide.

What skills are measured in the primary math assessment?

The assessment will cover four areas of math: number, patterns and relationships, shape and space, and statistics and probability. Your child’s teacher may use a sample math assessment in the classroom to discuss effective strategies and help students feel comfortable with the assessment format.

How long does it take to write the primary math assessment?

The assessment is administered in the classroom over two days in June.  It will take about 1 to 1.5 hours each day to write.

How should my child prepare for the primary math assessment?

To prepare for the assessment in advance, your child can review all math concepts learned in class this year. The best preparation for any assessment is arriving at school well rested and ready to participate.
