Environmental / Public Health
The goal of Environmental/Public Heath is to promote and protect the health and well-being of all Islanders and visitors. Legislative authority for this program falls under the Public Health Act and the associated regulations which are enforced by Environmental Health Officers:
- Food Premises Regulations
- Milk Processing Regulations
- Recreational Camp Regulations
- Rental Accommodation Regulations
- Slaughterhouse Regulations
- Swimming Pool and Waterslide Regulations
- Tanning Facility Regulations
Environmental Health Officers
Environmental Heath Officers are responsible for carrying out measures to protect public health. This includes the administration and enforcement of provincial legislation and providing consultation, education, and investigative services to clients and other governmental departments.
Environmental Health Officers in Prince Edward Island hold a certificate in Public Heath Inspection from the Canadian Institute of Public Heath Inspectors.

- may involve other government departments -
- given the broad scope covered by "environment" it is important to understand the issue in order to make contact with the appropriate government department.
Property Complaints
Complaints about a specific property that has dilapidated buildings, derelict vehicles and litter located on the property, which is visible to the public, should be directed to the local municipality for enforcement of local bylaws. If not located within a municipality, direct complaints to the Department of Housing, Land and Communities for enforcement under the Unsightly Properties Act.
Environmental Emergency
To report an environmental emergency (e.g. oil, pesticide, chemical spill, air quality problems, fish kills, etc.), contact the Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action.
Cyanobacteria (Blue-Green Algae)
To report a suspected blue-green algae bloom, contact the Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action.
