Change of Gender Designation
The process will begin once we receive your completed application, associated documentation and fee at the Vital Statistics office. You will be contacted by staff from Vital Statistics to confirm receipt of the application and to ensure that application has been completed and that additional information is not required to proceed with your application. Staff will arrange an appointment time for you to sign the required documentation in the present of a commissioner of oaths.
Who can request a gender identity change?
- If you are an adult you can apply for a gender designation change as along as you have been born in PEI, have resided in the Province for at least three months, and are not in lawful custody of another person.
- If you are the legal custodian of a minor (under the age of 18) who has been living in the province at least three months, you can apply for a legal change of gender designation for the child, as long as they have been born on PEI.
- You must have written consent of any other person who has lawful custody or a parent who is lawfully entitle to access to the minor.
- A child aged 12 or older must provide written consent to change his or her designation.
Required Documents
- An application for a change of gender designation completed by the individual requesting the change (Section 1 of the Application):
- A written statement from the applicant confirming the applicant has assumed, identifies with the intends to maintain the gender identity that corresponds with the change requested (Section 2 of the Application).
- A completed statement (Section 3 of the Application) from a Physician that confirms that the applicant's gender designation request is consistent with the gender designation with which the applicant identifies.
- A copy of the applicant's government issued photo ID (Section 4 of the Application).

How long will it take for my gender designation to be changed?
It may take from 3 - 5 weeks to complete the application process. It can take longer if more information is needed or if your forms haven't been filled in entirely.
What information do I need to proceed with a gender identity change?
Before you request a gender identity change, make sure you have the following information:
- the date and place of birth of the person whose gender identity is to be changed;
- details concerning the parentage of the individual who is requesting a gender change;
- proof of lawful custody of the person and the relationship between the applicant and the person, if the person whose gender is to be changed is a child (minor).
The process to change the gender of an individual also requires the following supporting documents:
- written consent of legal guardians of any child whose gender is to be changed and of that child if over the age of 12;
- proof of PEI residency (PEI Health Card, citizenship card, etc.)
- all previously issued birth certificates.
