French Language Proficiency Requirements

Language Proficiency Requirements

Positions with the PEI government could require different French oral proficiency levels to deliver services in French, supporting the provincial French Language Services Act.

A bilingual designated position is a position which requires the knowledge and use of the English and French language in order for the duties of that position to be performed satisfactorily.

Candidates applying for a designated bilingual position with the provincial government must have achieved the Advanced level on the French Language Oral Proficiency ScaleThe level must be confirmed with an oral proficiency evaluation before the position is offered.

Incumbents of a bilingual designated position are required to maintain at least an Advanced level of speaking proficiency.  Incumbents with an Advanced Plus level or higher are granted an exemption from future oral proficiency testing.
