Student Loan Appeals
If you feel your student loan application was not assessed according to your actual financial need, you may appeal the decision. Before you begin the appeal process, make sure the expenses factored into your assessment qualify for an appeal.
Does my student loan assessment qualify for appeal?
In order for your appeal to be considered, it must include appealable expenses, such as essential home repairs, uninsured medical or dental costs, emergency car repairs, or summer school tuition. You must provide verification (copies of receipts, invoices, etc.) for any appealable expense you declare.
Your appeal will not be considered if it includes:
- Non appealable expenses, e.g., basic living costs, travel, tuition, books, fees; or
- If your student costs and educational expenses exceed the maximum loan funding available to all PEI students.
Student contribution appeal: You must show that you were unable to save the expected amount from your pre-study work period. Some factors may be, travel to your summer job, car repairs, rent, uninsured medical or dental, etc. that were incurred during your specified pre-study period.
Parental contribution appeal: Your parent(s) must show they are unable to contribute the expected amount towards your education because of reasons beyond control, e.g. emergency car or home repairs, medical expense, or reduced income. Ongoing monthly expenses, e.g. mortgages, loans or utilities, are not appeal items; moderate standard of living (MSOL) allowance has been previously allowed for in the initial assessment.
Single parent/spousal contribution appeal: Ongoing monthly expenses, e.g. mortgages, loans or utilities, may be considered for married or common-law students. You must submit a complete monthly expense breakdown with verification of all major expenses. (Please use the Monthly Budget Appeal Form)
