Apply for Verification of Eligibility as a Substitute Teacher

You must hold a valid PEI Teacher’s licence and have your eligibility verified by the Registrar in order to substitute teach at the certified rate in a PEI public K-12 school. Please complete the online form below to apply for Verification of Eligibility as a Substitute Teacher.

Please note: It is a substitute teacher’s responsibility to register with the employing education authority initially and for each subsequent school year to ensure their name is added to the substitute teacher call centre system.

A certified teacher may accept day-to-day substitute assignments and contract assignments (over 20 consecutive days). A certified teacher on a part-time teaching assignment may accept substitute assignments throughout the day or on days when they are not under contract. Certified teachers who are on an approved leave such as a maternity leave or on retirement from a PEI school authority may also substitute for a teacher at the certified rate, although a retired teacher should confirm with the PEITF to determine the number of days they can teach without impacting their pension.

What if I do not have a PEI teacher’s licence?

If you hold a valid teacher’s licence from outside of PEI or meet the eligibility requirements for a PEI teachers licence and want to work as a certified substitute teacher in a PEI public school, you must apply for a PEI teacher’s licence. Find more information at Prince Edward Island Teacher’s Certification Application

If you do not hold a PEI teachers licence and you meet the eligibility requirements to substitute for a PEI teacher, you may apply for a Substitute Teacher (Non-Certified) Permit
