Stretcher Transportation Services

Services that provide ground transportation by stretcher, for persons who do not require medical oversight in Prince Edward Island, are required to be licensed under the Stretcher Transportation Act.

Stretcher transportation services providers operate non-ambulance services in a specialized vehicle that meet the Stretcher Transportation Regulations that are equipped and staffed according to the Regulations.

Licensing

Stretcher Transportation Operators are required to apply for a license through the Registrar for Stretcher Transportation Services with the Department of Health and Wellness, in accordance with the Act.

Inspection

Prior to issuance of a license, or the renewal of a license, an applicant, or an operator, for stretcher transportation services is required to complete an application, which includes an inspection of all vehicles the Operator intends to use, the required equipment, and staff certifications. These requirements are detailed in the Stretcher Transportation Regulations.

The Inspector’s Report will be prepared within 30 days after completion of inspection. The Registrar will issue a license to operate where the Inspector’s Report determines the Operator is compliant with the requirements of the Regulations.

Vehicles used in a stretcher transportation operation must be inspected every six months.

Applying to Operate a Stretcher Transportation Service

Operators seeking to provide stretcher transportation services in Prince Edward Island are required to complete the application form and submit it to the Registrar.

Prospective Operators should consult the Stretcher Transportation Act and the Stretcher Transportation Regulations, prior to submitting an application to operate. The Regulations provide a detailed description of the vehicle design specifications, the required equipment and staffing composition and their requisite certifications – including current certification in Standard First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – which must be met before the Registrar will issue a license to operate.
