Boiler and Pressure Vessel Installation/Alteration Permit
A permit is needed to install or alter any boiler or pressure vessel, which is not housed in a private residence, for any of the following:
- Power (usually steam) boilers above 10 kw (34,152 BTUs) operating at 103 kPa (15 psi) or above,
- Heating (hot water or biomass) boilers above 20 kw (68,304 BTUs) operating at 201 kPa (30 psi) or above, or
- Pressure vessels with an internal diameter of more than 152.4 mm (6 inches) operating at 103 kPa (15 psi) or above.
A permit is not required to install or alter a boiler or pressure vessel that is not under pressure or is vented to the atmosphere.
Am I eligible to apply?
You must hold a valid Mechanical Contractor’s Licence to install or alter a boiler or pressure vessel.
How do I apply?
Fill out the online form below and pay the application fee or fill out the PDF application and send it to Inspection Services (contact information is below).
You must provide the following information:
- Your business address and contact information;
- The contact information of the property owner and address where the work will be completed;
- Details about the installation/alteration such as:
- Location (e.g., boiler is located in Building A at basement level);
- If applicable:
- Date when the work is ready for inspection;
- Number of boilers or pressure vessels;
- Canadian Registration Number (CRN);
- Manufacturer Name;
- Size of boiler or pressure vessel;
- Type and description of pressure piping systems; and
- Name of the electrician who will perform electrical work.
- NB-365 Report of Boiler Installation (Form I-1) is to be completed for installation of all boilers and fuel-fired potable water heaters.
How much does a permit cost?
The cost for a permit is $35 plus HST plus any additional shortage or extra charges for inspections as referenced in the approved schedule of fees.
If applying online, you’ll pay the base $35 fee plus HST but you must contact Inspection Services to provide payment for additional inspection fees.
If applying in person or by mail, make cheques payable to the PEI Minister of Finance.
How long will it take to get a permit?
Allow up to three days for Inspection Services to process your application.
