Erythropoietin Drug Program

If you have been diagnosed with chronic renal failure, or are receiving kidney dialysis, you may be eligible for coverage of anemia treatment medications, which will eliminate the need for frequent blood transfusions.

Am I eligible?

You are eligible for the program if you:

How do I apply?

Your nephrologist or internist can refer you for coverage by submitting a completed Erythropoietin Program Approval Form [PDF | 21 KB]. Physician referrals will need to include a consultation report from a nephrologist or internist.

How much of the cost will be covered?

All costs of approved medications are covered by the program.

Where can I get my medication?

Drugs are provided through your hospital pharmacy for administration at the dialysis clinic. If you are a home dialysis patient, you can arrange to pick up your medication at the Queen Elizabeth or Prince County Hospital pharmacy.

What if my medication is not listed in the PEI Pharmacare Formulary?

If your medication is not included in the PEI Pharmacare Formulary, it will not be eligible for cost coverage. Special authorization requests will not be considered under this program. You will only be eligible for coverage of the approved medications through the Erythropoietin Drug Program.

What if I move away from PEI?

Your eligibility for this program will end the day you leave PEI to take up residency elsewhere.
