Adopt-A-Highway

The Adopt-A-Highway program encourages Islanders to help keep communities beautiful by participating in roadside clean-ups.

Your group will adopt a five kilometre section of roadway for four years. Each year you will commit to two clean ups – one in spring and one in fall. You will be provided with garbage bags as well as safety signs, vests and guidelines. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will be responsible for collecting the bags of garbage when you are finished.

Can I adopt a highway?

Any business or group of volunteers can join the program. All participants must be at least 12 years of age and each group must have at least one adult for every five youth under the age of 18.

How can I apply?

Choose three roadways that you are interested in adopting. As long as that section hasn’t already been adopted, it should be available. You can use the Provincial Road Atlas [16.9 Mb] for help selecting a route.

Fill out an application form and mail it to the The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Where can I find additional information?

Your group will be identified with a special roadway sign placed at each end of your adopted section. It has been proven that citizens are less likely to litter once they know that volunteers are committed to that area. Read the Adopt-A-Highway Program Safety Guidelines for more information.
