Motor Vehicle Registration Refund
Can I get a refund for my vehicle registration?
If your vehicle registration is still valid, you might qualify for a partial refund of the fee.
- Criteria for refunds depend on the type of vehicle.
- Refunds for private passenger vehicles—those designed primarily for personal transport, excluding buses or taxicabs, and weighing under 4,100 kilograms—are determined by the number of full months left before the registration expires.
- Trailer registration refunds are calculated based on the number of remaining twelve-month periods in the registration term.
- A refund cannot be issued for the current month.
To find out if you qualify for a refund, visit or contact your nearest Access PEI site.
How do I receive a refund for my vehicle registration?
To receive a refund, you must surrender your vehicle license plate with a valid registration sticker.
In PEI, take your license plate with a valid registration sticker attached to any Access PEI location. If you are eligible, you can get a refund directly for amounts of $100 or less, or by e-transfer for amounts over $100.
If you are in a province outside of PEI, request a refund by letter and include the following:
- Your name, address, phone number and email address
- your signature and date of request
- your plate with valid sticker attached or a letter from the authority confirming receipt of your plate and valid sticker
- a completed Vendor Registration Form (if you have not completed one before)

If I move to a different province from PEI, can I transfer my vehicle registration to the new province?
- Thanks to an agreement between PEI, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, you can exchange your PEI vehicle registration for one in the Maritime province you relocate to.
- If you move to a province outside of New Brunswick or Nova Scotia and wish to get a refund for your PEI registration, you’ll need to apply for a refund through Access PEI using the steps mentioned above and cover the cost of registering your vehicle in the new province.
