Register a Private Training School
Schools offering occupational training programs in Prince Edward Island are required to be registered in accordance with the Private Training Schools Act. The Department of Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population is responsible for administering the Private Training Schools Act.
An occupational training programs is defined as a program of study that when successfully completed by a student, qualifies the student to receive a certificate or diploma in respect of the occupation and either exceeds; 40 hours of instruction or $1,000 in tuition and associated fees. Contact the Administrator of Private Training Schools if you are unsure if your training program needs to be registered.
A Private Training School is a private business which offers an occupational training program. These schools are privately owned and operated businesses.
Is there a fee to register a Private Training School?
You are required to pay a registration fee for the school, program(s) and each instructor as follows:
- Initial school registration: $500
- Each additional program: $350
- Instructor registration: $35 per instructor
The Private Training Schools Act require private training schools to have a security bond in place which is calculated according to the number of students, enrolment fees, and the timing of fee collection. Schools are also required to contribute to a Student Protection Fund.

Once all documentation has been approved, the Administrator may issue tentative approval of registration, which is a formal statement that the school will be registered providing appropriate facilities and instructors are in place. This is common practice to enable school operators to proceed with administrative details such as signing a lease, purchasing equipment, and hiring instructors.
The official school registration will be issued once the facilities and instructors have been finalized, and all fees have been paid. Upon registering the school, the Administrator will:
- Issue a Certificate of Registration, which lists the authorized training programs;
- Issue Instructor Authorization certificates;
- Add your school to the list of registered private training schools; and
- Notify Student Financial Services so students who register at your Private Training School may qualify for student aid.
How long does the registration process take?
Allow four to six months to complete the registration process.
