Course teaches how to apply new building code

Training is available for those involved in the Island’s construction industry on how to apply the newly adopted National Building Code.

The Construction Association of PEI has collaborated with the Prince Edward Island government and Holland College to offer a voluntary certification program; contact the association at 902-368-3303 or e-mail admin@capei.ca to register.

The new National Building Code is the model followed across the country for the construction and design of buildings.

“Adopting the new building code will improve the energy efficiency of our buildings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while it also will reduce red tape for the industry,” Communities, Land and Environment Minister Richard Brown said. “We are pleased to invest in upgrading skills for people who will be applying the new building code.”

The Buildings Codes Act passed in the spring 2017 legislature. Enforcement for residential construction will be phased in over two years to allow the industry time to adjust to the new requirements.

The National Building Code will become law once public consultations are completed and new regulations are approved. 

“The new National Building Code will ensure that builders, homeowners, and developers follow the same standards,” Construction Industry Association of PEI executive director Sam Sanderson said. “We encourage everyone in the industry to take advantage of this course to familiarize themselves with the new code.” 

Adoption of the 2015 National Building Code supports the province’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment. Monthly energy savings will offset the average cost for homeowners of implementing the requirements of the National Building Code.
