Funding from province to help Island firefighters get home safely

Island firefighters can access free taxi service to get them home safely after responding to an emergency event.

The PEI Fire Ride Program, administered by the PEI Firefighter Association (PEIFFA), is a one-time $15,000 fund to cover full taxi fares for any Island firefighter to go back home after attending an emergency outside their local fire district.

“Firefighters have assisted Island EMS with CPR during transportation of patients to Island hospitals, and this grant will ensure those firefighters can return back to their communities safely and conveniently. The Island Fire Service greatly appreciates the continuing support from our provincial government,” said Gerard McMahon, president of the PEI Firefighters Association.

The Department of Justice and Public Safety is also providing the PEI Fire School an additional $50,000 to help with their overall operations, such as the purchase and maintenance of training equipment.

“Every single firefighter in our province plays a critical job in keeping Island communities safe. We made some important investments into the PEI Fire School last year, and I’m proud to be renewing our commitment to Island firefighters again this year. Making sure the women and men can get home safely after long days and nights is the least that we can do for the very people that keep us all safe.”
