More seniors can get help with cost of home repairs

Home Together – Renovation Support for Island Home Owners

The provincial government has expanded eligibility criteria so that more Island seniors can benefit from the Seniors Home Repair Program.

Grants between $1,000 and $2,000 are available for qualifying seniors to help with the cost of home renovations such as electrical, structural, heating, plumbing, and life safety.  New applicants are no longer required to match the grant dollar-for-dollar which will benefit lower-income seniors in need of minor home repairs.

“Seniors use this program to make the costs of repairs such as replacing windows, making a bathroom safer, or fixing a roof a little more manageable,” said Family and Human Services Minister Tina Mundy. “We continuously improve our programs to support seniors to age well in their homes and stay in their communities.”

Here are the new and expanded criteria:

  • $50,000 maximum qualifying income (increased from $35,000);
  • Applicants no longer need to match the amount of the grant (co-pay eliminated);
  • New maximum grant scale, based on income, ensures those in greatest need receive proportional funding; and,
  • Seniors can apply to this program regardless if they are eligible or have received funds from other programs such as the PEI Home Renovation program.
