Proposals for new transitional housing sought

Supporting Island families -

The provincial government invites developers to submit proposals to build housing in Charlottetown that supports Island families in transition.

The request is for at least six new transitional housing units for victims of family violence and at least five units for children who have aged out of the province’s child protection services.

The deadline for submitting proposals to government is May 1 and details are available at www.princeedwardisland.ca/en/tenders

“Our government’s ongoing and steadfast commitment is to help our most vulnerable Islanders when they need it the most,” Family and Human Services Minister Tina Mundy said. “This investment will allow 18-year-olds aging out of the care of the province to access affordable housing and the supports they need to get the best possible start to their adult lives, and victims of family violence to safely reintegrate into their communities.”

The projects are part of $7.2 million in federal funding received through the Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement, which is allocated for new social housing units in areas of most need.

Also included in the federal funding is $5.2 million directed to seniors housing, for which requests for proposals were issued recently for 30 new units in Charlottetown and 20 new units in Summerside. All of the units will be completed and available for rental by April 1, 2019.

In addition to these projects, government continues to collaborate with municipalities, private developers, and communities to meet the current and future housing needs of Islanders.  For example:

  • a team of housing experts and clients was assembled to help create a provincial housing action plan; and
  • a housing supply task force was established to inform the work of the team and identify innovative approaches to address housing challenges across the province.
