Public input invited on Post-Secondary Institutions Sexual Violence Policies Act regulations

The public is invited to provide feedback on proposed regulations to support the Post-Secondary Institutions Sexual Violence Policies Act.

The new Act will require post-secondary institutions to have sexual violence policies and resources available to prevent sexual violence.

Consultations to develop the Act and the draft regulations were well attended and valuable input was provided. The Act received Royal Assent in December 2018 and will be proclaimed once the regulations are finalized.

“Public input is key to the success of this process, and I encourage Islanders to take part in the online consultation. I’m pleased that the regulations are nearing completion so we can proclaim the Act, and ensure sexual violence policies and the necessary supports are available and our campuses are as safe as possible.”

- Education and Lifelong Learning Minister Brad Trivers

Islanders can provide input on the regulations at Post-Secondary Institutions Sexual Violence Policies Act until December 16, 2019.

The legislation and regulations will help institutions take steps to ensure Island campuses are safe and secure. They will be required to provide training and awareness as part of their policy, and ensure supports and services are well communicated and available to students affected by sexual violence.

Institutions will be required to respond sensitively and appropriately should a student choose to come forward to make a complaint about sexual violence.

Prince Edward Island is on track to become the first province in Atlantic Canada to have legislation and general regulations on this important issue.
