Statement by Minister Thompson on International Day of Potato
Hon. Bloyce Thompson, Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture, issued the following statement on the inaugural International Day of Potato:
“Prince Edward Island (PEI) is proud to be home to some of the best food producers in the world, which, of course, includes our world-class potatoes. Everyone in the potato industry, from our growers and packers to our distributors and processors, cares and showcases pride in sharing quality PEI potatoes with people in over 44 countries spanning five different continents.
Potatoes have been a staple in our local agriculture industry for generations and is engrained in all of our lives – whether it be through enjoying the product on the dinner table or playing along with songs and pop culture references – we are all proud to live on the Island known for the PEI Potato.
Today and every day, I want to thank everyone in our local potato industry for their impact on our communities across this Island. By embracing innovative practices, being stewards of both the land and the environment, and always striving for growth, our small Island has continued to lead on the global stage.
I am proud to celebrate the first-ever International Day of Potato and I look forward to continuing to work with farmers and industry partners to further showcase all the great things that come from our PEI Potato Industry.”
