Our History
Located in the Acadian region of Evangeline, this historically French-speaking region has offered public library services since September 1934, when a public library was established in the community of Wellington. This library was part of Prince Edward Island's Carnegie Demonstration Project, which established free public library services in communities across the province. The project was funded from 1933 to 1936 by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. From the outset, the library offered materials in both English and French.
In 1978-1979, the decision was made to establish a larger French-language library in the Evangeline area. A new building known as the Conseil scolaire-communautaire Évangéline was opened in the community of Abram Village, housing the local school, community center and public library. It was at this time that the library began providing French-language materials and offering its main services and programs in French.
The library continues to operate within the Evangeline School facility in Abram Village, and it has the distinction of being one of the PEI Public Library Service's French-language libraries.
