What is Health Promotion?

Health Promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health.

Health Promotion is strongly linked to the global challenge of non-communicable disease, also known as chronic disease. It situates health as a product of daily life and focuses on the basic requirements for health, such as shelter, education, food, income, etc. These basic requirements (or root causes) for health are also known as the Social Determinants of Health

What are the five strategies for advancing health promotion work?

  1. Develop personal skills
  2. Create supportive environments
  3. Build healthy public policy
  4. Reorient health services
  5. Strengthen community action

What can I do to increase health promotion efforts in my community?

  • Advocate to improve the conditions that affect health - political, economic, social cultural, environmental, behavioural, and biological factors all favour or can be harmful to health.
  • Mediate between differing interests in society to ensure strategies and programs are adapted to local needs and include others outside of the health sector (departments, organizations and individuals) in your coordinated efforts.
  • Enable all people to achieve their fullest health potential by reducing differences and ensuring equal opportunities and resources are available to help individuals to take control of those things which determine their health (e.g.  social, cultural and economic factors).
