Asthma Education Centre

The Dr. Patrick Gill Asthma Education Centre, named in memory of an Island respirologist and leader in asthma education, has been helping improve the quality of life for islanders living with asthma since 1997. The centre is also a resource to other health care providers. 

We can help you understand more about you or your child’s asthma, and how to control and manage symptoms. A Certified Asthma Educator can help you learn: 

• how to recognize and understand your body’s warning signs;
• what triggers your asthma and how to avoid it;
• how to take inhaled medications with minimal side effects;
• use an action plan – your personal guide if your asthma gets out of control;
• achieve control of your asthma; and
• perform a breathing test called spirometry, if age appropriate.

Where is the Asthma Education Centre?

The asthma education centre is located in the lower level of the Ambulatory Care Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, 60 Riverside Drive in Charlottetown, PEI. 

What are the office hours?

The centre is open Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Will I need a referral?

Yes. Your family doctor, a specialist, emergency room physician, or nurse practitioner can refer you or your child to the asthma education centre. Once your referral has been received, you will be contacted by the centre to set up an appointment.   

What should I bring to my appointment?

You will need to bring:

• your PEI Health Card;
• all medicines you are taking, including over the counter medicines; and
• any inhalers and chambers you are using.

All patients must register at the Admitting Department located at the front entrance of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

What will happen at my appointment?

The goal of the centre is to educate people with asthma about their condition and help them control and manage their symptoms. You will see a nurse and a respiratory therapist certified in asthma education to receive individual counselling and asthma management. You may come for one visit or two or three visits. The education is individualized according to your needs. The centre encourages family involvement at all stages of the learning process.  

Will I have to pay to go to the Asthma Education Centre?

Once you are referred, services at the Asthma Education Centre are covered with your PEI Health Card.

Will my family doctor still be involved in my asthma care?

Throughout your treatment, your family doctor will manage your asthma. As an active member of the asthma centre team, your family doctor will be kept up-to-date on your progress.
