Moncton Private MRI Program

Health PEI is partnering with a private MRI clinic in New Brunswick with the goal of reducing wait times for semi-urgent and routine MRIs, as well as providing timely access to services for patients requiring follow up exams. This initiative aligns with Health PEI's commitment to addressing challenges within the current health care system and plays a key role in enhancing the accessibility of essential services for Islanders.

When and where does the program start?

Referrals to the Moncton MRI Clinic started February 18, 2025.

Who qualifies for MRIs in Moncton?

To qualify for this program, patients must be referred for an MRI to the QEH MRI department by a qualified health care provider. The case is then reviewed by a radiologist who will determine the urgency of the exam (urgent, semi-urgent, routine or follow-up). Urgent MRIs will continue to be performed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, while patients who are on the wait list for a semi-urgent MRI will be prioritized for an appointment at the Moncton clinic.

Can I call Health PEI to get an MRI?

Patients will continue to follow the typical MRI process by being referred to the QEH MRI department by a Health PEI health care provider. Patients cannot be given an appointment without first being referred to a specialist who will review their case.

What if I don’t have a family doctor or nurse practitioner?

People without a primary care provider (family doctor or nurse practitioner) to refer them to a specialist, and have a non-urgent concern, are encouraged to access the Unaffiliated Virtual Care clinic to speak with a physician. Patients who require an in-person appointment may be referred to a primary care access clinic for an appointment. Patients may also call 8-1-1 for advice on where to best access care, if they are not sure.

How will patients be informed that they qualify for an MRI at the Moncton clinic?

Health PEI will communicate directly with patients to ask if they would be willing to travel to Moncton for their MRI. If the patient consents, Health PEI staff will confirm they are able to do so safely and the appointment will be booked through Skip the Waiting Room. MRI scans will be reviewed by Health PEI radiologists and the images and report will become part of the Health PEI patient record.

Do I have to pay for an MRI at the Moncton clinic upfront?

MRIs booked at the Moncton MRI Clinic by Health PEI do not require upfront payment by the patient.

How will I be reimbursed for travel?

Patients will be provided with information about travel arrangements and any additional support services that may be available at the time of booking. Generally, fuel costs and bridge toll will be provided for patients travelling for this service.

What if I previously went to Moncton and paid for an MRI? Will I be reimbursed?

The new program is designed to address MRI wait times for those on the current wait list and the process is not retroactive. Patients who paid for a private MRI on their own will not be reimbursed through this program.

If I book my own appointment and go directly to Moncton for an MRI, will I be reimbursed?

The only patients eligible for the Moncton MRI Clinic are those given an appointment by Health PEI. MRI scans must be requested by a health care provider on PEI, referred to the QEH MRI department, and assessed for urgency by a Health PEI radiologist to determine where they would be placed on the wait list. Patients who choose to purchase a private MRI scan outside this process are not eligible for reimbursement.

How will Health PEI ensure the quality and safety of MRI services provided?

Health PEI is working closely with the clinic to establish protocols and standards to ensure the quality and safety of the MRI services provided. The MRI scans will be reviewed by local radiologists in PEI, who will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of the reports.

Are there any concerns about potential privacy issues related to sharing patient information with a private clinic in another province?

Health PEI will ensure that patient information is shared securely and in compliance with privacy laws. Strict protocols are in place to protect patient privacy and confidentiality.

How much is Health PEI paying for this service?

The total cost of the contract is estimated to be approximately $3.8 million. This cost includes the purchase of 2,600 MRI appointments and additional support costs, such as travel and administrative support.

Is Health PEI doing anything to improve MRI services on the Island in Health PEI hospitals?

Health PEI is actively recruiting and training new medical radiation technologists to increase staffing levels. Two new technologists have started work in January 2025, helping to maintain urgent MRIs on Island. Health PEI is exploring other potential solutions, such as expanding MRI capacity within PEI or partnering with other health care providers locally. This includes possibly utilizing capacity at the Atlantic Veterinary College or private businesses. By taking a multi-faceted approach, Health PEI aims to improve access to MRI services and reduce wait times for patients in the long term.
