Retired Volunteer Firefighter: Driver's License and Vehicle Registration

The Firefighter License Plate Program has been expanded to honour the service or Prince Edward Island's Retired Volunteer Firefighters. As of November 1, 2024, retired volunteer firefighters with at least 15 years of active service will be provided with free vehicle registrations and license plates for two (2) passenger vehicles. The expanded program also provides the retired volunteer firefighter with a free driver license renewal to be available every five years on their normal renewal schedule.

The two free vehicle registrations are to be used on vehicles where the retired volunteer firefighter is the plate owner, meaning the vehicle must be registered in their name. Unlike the Active Volunteer Firefighter Plate Program, waived fees will not apply to immediate family members at the same home address.

What do I need to obtain the retired volunteer firefighter registration plate?

To qualify for the Retired Volunteer Firefighter program, have an original Identification Letter for Private Vehicle Registration signed by the Fire Chief of the fire service in which you have served and by the President of the PEI Firefighter’s Association. This letter may be presented at any Access PEI location to receive the free registrations and driver's license. The Identification Letter for Private Vehicle Registration will only be required during the initial transaction and will remain valid in perpetuity.

Retired Volunteer Firefighters will be issued standard Firefighter plates; no new plate type will be required.

How do I get a replacement plate?

A worn out or damaged firefighter plate may be replaced once within each year at no cost. The old plate, with validation sticker, must be returned to an Access PEI location.
