Statement by Premier Rob Lantz on International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Hon. Rob Lantz, Premier of Prince Edward Island issued the following statement:

“Today is International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed annually on March 21 to recognize the injustices and prejudices fueled by racial discrimination.

This important day commemorates the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre when police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire on a peaceful demonstration against apartheid pass laws, killing 69 people.

The Government of PEI is unwavering in its commitment to eliminating racial discrimination in all forms. The Anti-Racism Office is collaborating with multiple government departments to implement concrete actions outlined in the Anti-Racism Action Plan for Prince Edward Island.

Communities across the province are leading the way in promoting inclusion and challenging racism.  Our government is pleased to offer Anti-Racism and Microgrants to support these efforts by funding community-led projects that help to create meaningful change.

I want to recognize the strength and unity of our communities as they take action against hate, inequity, and racism.

As we reflect on the struggles of the past, let us acknowledge the ongoing struggles of racialized people today and commit to collectively building a safe, inclusive and supportive Island for all.”
