Licensed Practical Nurses - Nursing Recruitment Incentive Program

The PEI Nursing Recruitment Incentive Program for recent graduate and experienced Licensed Practical Nurses is an initiative to provide meaningful employment opportunities and to fill vacant LPN positions of Health PEI. 

Eligibility

Who is eligible for this program?

Eligible Licensed Practical Nurses include individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Students completing the last year of a recognized Canadian Practical Nursing program; or
  • Applicants with experience working as a Licensed Practical Nurse; and
  • Applicants who are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Applicants not currently working as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Prince Edward Island or have not worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Prince Edward Island within the past 6 months; and, 
  • Applicants who are eligible for registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Prince Edward Island.

Are students eligible who are enrolled in a Canadian Practical Nursing program in a college outside of PEI?

Yes, students from all recognized Canadian Practical Nursing programs are encouraged to apply.

Incentives and Opportunities

  • A one-time financial incentive of $5,000 is available effective March 1, 2023.
  • Start date of employment with Health PEI must be January 1, 2023 or later, and a return in service agreement must be signed and approved, with an effective date of January 1, 2023 or later.

Is there a return-in-service commitment?

Yes.

  • For Graduate LPNs with less than 24 months experience, there is a 3,900 working hours return-in-service agreement that must be signed by the graduate LPN applicant and the employer prior to the commencement of work.
  • For Experienced LPNs with greater than 24 months experience, there is a 1,950 working hours return-in-service agreement that must be signed by the experienced LPN applicant and the employer prior to the commencement of work.

Are these incentives taxable?

Yes, all financial incentives offered by the Department of Health and Wellness are taxable. As such, Canada Revenue Agency rules apply to incentive payments.

Rural Incentive Program

An additional one-time recruitment incentive of $5,000 is available for candidates who accept a position outside of Charlottetown.

  • 3,900 working hour return-in-service agreement completed simultaneously with the Nursing Recruitment Incentive Program return-in-service agreement.
  • Eligible locations include all areas outside of Charlottetown including but not limited to Summerside, Town of Three Rivers, East of Three Rivers and West of Summerside.

Student Loan Incentive Program

A one-time financial incentive of up to $8,000 is available for candidates who accept a position within Charlottetown who clearly demonstrate:

You can apply for Licensed Practical Nurse in high-demand positions online at Jobs PEI. You will need to complete these steps to submit an on-line application:

  1. Identify the competition number(s) for the position of interest;
  2. Create a Jobs PEI account using a valid email address and contact information;
  3. Apply for Health career opportunities by competition number using your Jobs PEI account.

What vacancies exist?

All external LPN vacancies will be posted on the external job board with the PEI Public Service Commission www.jobspei.ca under “Health PEI Jobs Open to the Public”. 

Will interviews be conducted?

Yes, if deemed qualified, you will be contacted by the Public Service Commission to complete an interview.

What information is required to complete the online application?

You will need to provide the following information to complete the on-line application:

  • Personal identity and contact information, including a valid email address.
  • Identity and contact information for an alternate individual.
  • Academic information including your educational institution, program of study and expected date of completion.
  • Canadian residency status.

References will be obtained at the time of your interview.
