Buying and Using Domestic (Home & Garden) Pesticides
Le contenu suivant est seulement disponible en anglais.
In Prince Edward Island, homeowners can purchase selected pesticides for home use. These are called domestic class pesticides. Two kinds of domestic class pesticides are sold in the province:
- self select domestic pesticides: These products contain lower risk active ingredients or require no preparation (dilution or mixing) prior to use. They are often sold in small amounts (less than or equal to one litre or one kilogram).
- controlled purchase domestic pesticides: These products may require special handling, or they may be sold in larger container sizes (greater than one litre or one kilogram). Controlled purchase domestic pesticides cannot be openly displayed at vendor outlets. They must be kept behind the sales counter or inside a locked cabinet.
How can I check to see if a pesticide is registered for sale or use in Canada?
All pesticides offered for sale or use in Canada are assessed and registered by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA). These products pose little risk to the user or to the environment when used according to the label. No special training or certification is needed to purchase or use a domestic pesticide. However, homeowners should carefully read the product label and follow all instructions.
