Do I need a permit to drill a well?

Depending upon the capacity, depth and the location of the well, a permit to drill a well may be required.

A Well Permit is required if the well(s) are to be:

  • located in one of the water well restricted areas (map); or
  • constructed in a manner which departs from the requirements of the Water Well Regulations; or
  • more than 5 wells constructed for a single closed loop geothermal system; or
  • well(s) with a collective length of more than 250 meters that are to be drilled or constructed for a single closed loop geothermal system.

A Groundwater Exploration Permit is required if the well:

  • construction or reconstruction is of a high capacity well (345 m3/day) or greater; or
  • is to be used to provide water to a central water supply system.
