Do I need a permit to drill a well?
Depending upon the capacity, depth and the location of the well, a permit to drill a well may be required.
A Well Permit is required if the well(s) are to be:
- located in one of the water well restricted areas (map); or
- constructed in a manner which departs from the requirements of the Water Well Regulations; or
- more than 5 wells constructed for a single closed loop geothermal system; or
- well(s) with a collective length of more than 250 meters that are to be drilled or constructed for a single closed loop geothermal system.
A Groundwater Exploration Permit is required if the well:
- construction or reconstruction is of a high capacity well (345 m3/day) or greater; or
- is to be used to provide water to a central water supply system.
How do I obtain a Well Permit?
To apply for a Well Permit, you must:
- complete and submit the Well Permit Application Form; and
- submit the application fee of $25.
