Applying for a Child Support Order

Le contenu suivant est seulement disponible en anglais.

When a relationship ends, parents may be able to come to an agreement on a suitable amount for regular child support payments without going to court. The Child Support Guidelines are the rules parents (and the courts) are required to follow for child support decisions.

Parents who cannot reach an agreement, or who want their agreement put into a court order, must apply to the court to get a child support order.

How do I apply for a child support order?

Child Support Guidelines Officers in Charlottetown provide information on the Child Support Guidelines and provide assistance to people applying to the court for first-time child support or to change their existing support order or agreement. The Officers can provide assistance to both parents. The Officers can only assist in matters where neither parties have a lawyer.

Child Support Guidelines Officers are not lawyers and do not provide legal advice. As they do not represent either parent, they will assist both parents through the court process. There is no charge for this service, with the possible exception of photocopying or serving documents.
