Protecting PEI’s Oyster Aquaculture Industry

Le contenu suivant est seulement disponible en anglais.

The presence of multinuclear sphere X (MSX) in some PEI oyster harvst sites is a serious concern for the PEI oyster aquaculture industry. MSX is a parasite that is not harmful to humans but hinders oyster growth and increases oyster mortality.

Island oyster harvesters can help protect their industry by:

  • Examining their stocks for the presence of MSX; and
  • Taking necessary action to prevent the parasite from spreading.

How can I tell if my stock may be infected with MSX?

Oyster stocks may be infected if:

  • Valves are slow to close when disturbed.
  • Growth rate is decreased; a new shell does not develop.
  • Digestive glands are pale (juvenile oysters).
  • Mortality rate is high. Oysters over two years old may have higher mortality rate.

What do I do if I notice my stock is affected?

  • Do not move oysters from infected to non-infected areas.
  • Report mortality events.
  • Report unauthorized movements of stocks.
  • Contact Canadian Food Inspection Agency at 902 566-7290 or email msx@gov.pe.ca.

How can I help prevent the spread of MSX?

  • Rinse boats and gear with fresh water.
  • Leave equipment in direct sunlight for 48 hours.
  • Do not introduce oysters from MSX infected areas to new areas.

PEI is the second largest producer of oysters in Canada. Many Island families are affected by the discovery of MSX and its impact on our historic aquaculture industry.
