Stompin’ Tom Centre opens in Skinner’s Pond

Stompin’ Tom Connors is a Canadian legend, and one of Prince Edward Island’s favourite adoptive sons. His music has spanned generations and his story telling has shaped the Canadian identity. Now Islanders and visitors can experience the life and legacy of one of Canada’s true folk heroes at the Stompin’ Tom Centre, Schoolhouse and Homestead in Skinner’s Pond.

"The Connors Family would like to take this opportunity to show their appreciation and say thanks to Anne Arsenault, Tignish Initiatives, and all those individuals within the various levels of Government that came together to make this special Center come to be,” members of the Connors family said. "This was done, not just to honour Stompin’ Tom, but to celebrate his love for Canada and help anyone that arrives in Skinner’s Pond to learn something great about this Country."

“The Stompin’ Tom Centre will serve as a fitting memorial to a legendary Canadian and will give people of all ages an opportunity to get an up close and personal look at the life of a beloved Islander,” Premier Wade MacLauchlan said. “This facility will help attract tourists and Islanders to the western part of the province and support other local businesses and attractions.”

The Stompin’ Tom Centre will feature exhibits dedicated to Connors’ musical and cultural legacy, a gift shop, food service, and a space that will feature regular entertainment throughout the summer. The home where Connors lived and the schoolhouse he attended as a boy have been restored.

“People in this part of the Island are very excited about the potential this new facility brings to West Prince,” Tignish Palmer Road MLA Hal Perry said. “Not only does this Centre pay tribute to someone we all hold near and dear to our hearts, but it brings benefits to local businesses by bringing more people to this end of the Island.”

The first Stompin’ Tom Festival is taking place over the Canada Day weekend. The three day festival includes a talented line up of well known musicians and performers, food, fireworks and a parade.

The Provincial Government formally announced support for the project in 2013. In total, the province provided $569,768 to support land purchases and construction costs. The Province also supported the first annual festival with a $30,000 grant.

“We are honoured to open the doors on Canada Day 150 to the new Stompin' Tom Centre in Skinners Pond PEI to commemorate the life and music of Stompin' Tom Connors,” Executive Director of Tignish Initiative Anne Arsenault said. “The timing could not be more fitting to honour this iconic Canadian and legendary singer songwriter.”
