WorkPEI is helping to make the labour market easier to navigate for employers and for people looking for jobs on PEI.

“The job market is tighter than it used to be, so that means companies don’t really have the option of just looking at a stack of resumes,” says Amber James, community engagement officer at WorkPEI. “If they’re looking for a particular skill they can automatically search for people who list it in their resumes.

“It can be great for workers too,” she continued. “A job seeker may get contacted by an employer who has found their resume in our file and wants to talk to them. I imagine that feels pretty good to be contacted cold like that.”

WorkPEI is a provincial government service that matches employers with jobs seekers – both those living on the Island and those interested in moving here. Its latest metrics showed 1,806 resumes on file with 748 employers and 484 job openings listed.

It now offers a keyword search that helps employers avoid combining through stacks of resumes to find a candidate with a particular skill. The upgrade will make the labour market easier to navigate both for employers and for people looking for jobs on the Island.

James knows firsthand that WorkPEI can lead to rewarding careers right here on Prince Edward Island.

She registered as a university business graduate with experience in a family-owned automotive business. Now she’s WorkPEI’s community engagement officer, promoting the service to employers and workers.

“I can honestly tell them that Work PEI helps make successful connections,” James said.

Job seekers use WorkPEI to post resumes and search job offerings. Employers can sign up to post a company profile, to review resumes and to post listings for available work.

“We have a very talented workforce and a growing economy creating job opportunities,” said Sonny Gallant, minister of Workforce and Advanced Learning. “Here on PEI we work together to help each other, and WorkPEI does that by matching talented people with job openings. Whether people are looking for work, looking for a better job, or looking to move to Prince Edward Island from another region, WorkPEI can help them find a place on our Mighty Island.”
