Our History
The first public library in Alberton officially opened on November 21, 1933 as part of the PEI Carnegie Demonstration Project which established free public library services in communities across the province. The project was funded from 1933-1936 by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The library was located on the second floor of the Profit Building located at the corner of Main and Popular streets.
The library occupied various rooms in local buildings until on June 7th, 1951, a designated library building was opened on Alberton’s Main Street. The library was built on donated land and the facility’s construction was paid through local community fundraising.
For many years, the library facility was funded and maintained by a community non-profit group known as Alberton Library Limited. In 2016, this group turned over its building maintenance responsibilities to the local Town Council. Due to building issues, the library was moved from its previous home on Main Street to the old Alberton Railway Station. This location continues to be the home of the Alberton Public Library.
