Apply for a Permit to Operate a Public Pool

Le contenu suivant est seulement disponible en anglais.

A permit is required to operate a public or semi-public swimming pool, whirlpool or water fun park in PEI. The permit is valid for one year from date of issue and must be renewed annually. You can apply for the permit using the online form below.

A permit is not required for pools on private property used solely by the owner, owner’s family and guests invited without compensation.

Public and semi-public pools are inspected up to three times each year for water quality and public safety and must operate in compliance with the standards and requirements of the Public Health Act and Swimming Pool and Waterslide Regulations.

What do I need to complete the online application?

If this is a first-time permit, Environmental Health will contact you to request a copy of your pool specifications and construction plans. Please note: You are advised to inquire with your municipality for any related requirements.

You must specify the location and which class of pool you are operating. Permits are issued for the following:

  • Class A pool - swimming pools available to the public, that are not Class B pools, including municipal, community, institutional, athletic club, country club, display pools and portable pools;
  • Class B pool - swimming pools, including whirlpools, that are provided as part of a hotel, motel, health club, campground or apartment building, where the use of the pool is restricted exclusively to registered guests, tenants, occupants and their guests; and
  • Class C pool - swimming pools associated with or part of a water fun park, including wave pools and water slide flumes.

When will my permit be issued?

For a new pool, your permit will be issued following the satisfactory inspection of the pool by Environmental Health.

If you are renewing your licence to operate a public pool, as long as the last pool inspection was satisfactory, a permit will be issued. If there were problems, a follow-up inspection may be required before a permit is issued.

Use “Add a Reminder” on this page to request an automatic email message when it’s time to renew your permit.
