Years of Teaching Experience Recognition
You may be eligible for a higher salary level if you have teaching experience outside of a Prince Edward Island school board or if you have allied work experience.
What teaching experience is recognized for salary level purposes?
Full credit on a one (1) year for one (1) year basis for salary purposes, up to a maximum of ten (10) years, may be given approval by the Registrar for teaching service in the following settings:
- In a public school outside of Prince Edward Island
- In a licensed private school, band-operated school, or military-operated school
- In a community college or university as a sessional instructor, lecturer, assistant professor, associated professor, or full professor
- In a community-based adult education program
- In a licensed second language formal education program
- Working in a professional position with a PEI school board or with the PEI Department of Education and Lifelong Learning while not on secondment from a school board in a consultative, administrative, mentoring, or coaching role and where the work was directly related to the PEI public school system
- In a publicly funded kindergarten in PEI beginning in September, 2000, or teaching in a public kindergarten outside of PEI where you held a teaching certificate
What teaching experience is not recognized for salary level purposes?
The following may be recognized for partial recognition under the Allied Work Experience program, but do not qualify for full-credit recognition.
- Working as an early childhood educator
- Working as a pre-kindergarten teacher
- Working as an educational assistant or a special needs assistant
- Working as a teacher’s assistant at a university
- Coaching
- Working as an instructor in the context of private lessons
- Teaching in a PEI kindergarten prior to September, 2000
What do I need to apply for an evaluation of teaching experience for salary level purposes?
Please include the following with your completed application form:
- A letter from your former employer(s) sent directly from the employer to the Office of the Registrar, attesting to your past experience as follows:
- Opening and closing dates of employment
- Total experience in days per year and total number of years
- Status of employment as full- or part-time
- Nature of instruction (grade level and subject taught)
What Allied Work Experience is recognized for salary level purposes?
Allied Work Experience is work that is related to that associated with a teaching position, and may be recognized for salary increment purposes under the Allied Work Experience program. Recognition will be considered for paid work only related to teaching with an approved organization or association on a one (1) year for two (2) years of past allied work experience basis for time worked:
- As an educational assistant, special needs assistant, and/or child and youth worker
- As an early childhood educator, administrator in an early childhood centre, pre-kindergarten teacher, or as a kindergarten teacher in a private kindergarten prior to September, 2000
- Supervising an apprentice in a recognized apprenticeship program or supervising a student in a recognized cooperative education program
- As a work-site trainer
- In a counseling or social work capacity with school-aged children
- As a coach, fitness trainer, recreational facilitator, or community recreational programmer
- As a teaching assistant or lab assistant in a recognized post-secondary institution
- As an educational tutor
- In a professional position at a recognized educational institution or organization where the role was involved with the education system in terms of policy, evaluation, consulting, mentoring, administration, or research
What do I need to apply for an evaluation of Allied Work Experience for salary level purposes?
Please include the following with your completed application form:
- A letter from your former employer(s) sent directly from the employer to the Office of the Registrar, attesting to your past experience as follows:
- Opening and closing dates of employment
- Total experience in days per year, the time worked daily, and the total number of years
- Status of employment as full- or part-time
- Nature of the employment and how it relates to teaching
- The reporting nature under which your duties were enacted
- $50 fee
When does the salary increment come into effect?
The issue date of the salary increment is dated from the day on which all required documentation was received by the Office of the Registrar. Note that once approved the pay increase will become effective according to the timelines set out in the Memorandum of Agreement between the Education Negotiating Agency and the Prince Edward Island Teachers’ Federation, section 12.
Is there a fee to evaluate my teaching experience or Allied Work Experience?
There is no fee to evaluate your teaching experience. There is a $50 fee to evaluate your allied work experience.
You can pay fees by cheque or money order, payable to the Minister of Finance, in cash at the Office of the Registrar, or by credit card over the phone, email or fax by using a payment form. Fees are non-refundable unless the application is withdrawn and in the event that no staff time has been invested in processing the application.
