Prince Edward Island Community Grant for the Retention of Health Care Professionals

Program Overview

The aim of this program is to support Island communities in welcoming and retaining health care professionals. The Department of Health and Wellness will provide grant funding to community organizations, recognized community groups and municipalities to support initiatives aimed at making their community more welcoming, diverse and engaging for recruited health care professionals.

Goals of Program

  • Increase retention of health care professionals to communities
  • Create more engaging, culturally diverse, inviting communities for health care professionals and their families.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants for the grant include not-for-profit:

  • Community and Cultural Organizations
  • Municipalities
  • Recognized Community groups

Projects need to show:

  • Retention efforts aimed at encouraging health care professionals to stay in the community
  • Helping to reduce social and cultural barriers that may impact recruitment and retention of health care professionals
  • Creating a welcoming environment for health care professionals and their families

Examples of eligible programs could include:

  • Development of a cultural festival
  • Programs aimed at family engagement
  • Social engagement programs aimed at specific cultural or ethnic groups

Applicant Guidelines, Process, and Platform

Groups interested in applying for the grant are to complete the online questionnaire by June 28, 2024.  Questionnaire includes overview of the proposed project for health care professionals. Application will speak to benefit to the community and to PEI’s health care system, short- and long-term goals, and overview of use of funds (i.e. budget for the project).

Allocation & Disbursement of Grant Funding

The Department of Health and Wellness will review applications for the grant and notify successful candidates by July 12, 2024.  Maximum award is $2,500 per project. Upon approval, funds will be distributed to the applicant.

Required Reporting

Groups that have received funding are required to submit a report to the Department of Health and Wellness on allocation and distribution of funds by March 15, 2025. Reporting requirements include:

  • Overview of the project, including efforts to engage and retain health care professionals, benefits to the community and benefit to PEI’s health care system while detailing short- and long-term goals.
  • Overview of use of funds (i.e. disbursement of funds against proposed budget).
  • Number of health care professionals benefiting from the initiative in the community.
  • Feedback and summary from participants, including two written testimonials from health care professionals and/or their families who participated in the program supported by the funding.
