Internet Terms of Use Policy
The Prince Edward Island Public Library Service provides access to the Internet through free computer use or wifi to library members and visitors.
Users must abide by the Library's Technology Access Policy as well as agreeing to the following conditions:
- You, the user, are fully responsible for your actions when you access the Internet
- Information obtained through the Internet may contain material that is illegal, defamatory, inaccurate and/or offensive. The library does not provide any barriers to accessing the full range of information available.
- Your use of these services will be lawful and will respect the rights and interests of others. Illegal activities include the use of these services for harassment, slander, copyright infringement, dissemination of hate literature and child pornography among other restrictions. Respect for others means that obscene and/or offensive images cannot be displayed on computer screens. Staff may end an access session or ask the user to leave the premises if inappropriate content is displayed on a library owned or personal device.
- You are aware that your information is not encrypted (protected) and using these services is at your own risk.
- As with other library materials and services, supervision of a child’s access to the Internet is the responsibility of their parent or legal guardian. Parents or guardians are responsible for ensuring the child follows these conditions.
Internet use is a privilege, not a right. If these conditions are ignored, or violations of other policies occur, the Public Library Service may suspend or end your access to these services or contact law enforcement, if appropriate.
Technology Access Policy
Access to public computers, and WiFi, is available free of charge to library members and visitors. Other technology devices and services may be available with specific software, hardware and functionality varying from library to library. While the majority of these services are free to use, some services such as printing (3-D and paper) include cost recovery charges for materials used.
To ensure equitable access, time limits may be implemented at some libraries and access may be limited on occasion due to programs and other planned activities.
Users are responsible for their actions and activities. Improper use of library devices, Internet or wifi services may lead to the suspension or loss of privileges.
Use of library devices or WiFi connection is at the user’s own risk. The Public Library Service is not responsible for equipment malfunction or the loss or transmission of users’ data.
Staff Assistance
Assistance for using the Internet and accessing email, websites etc. is not guaranteed. Any assistance offered is at the discretion of library staff members and will vary according to service needs, time constraints, staff skill and staff comfort level.
Technical support for users’ personal devices is the responsibility of the user although libraries may offer computer and technology literacy programs. If time constraints allow and if requested, staff may provide assistance with personal devices in accordance with staff skill and comfort level.
While providing assistance, Library staff may have to operate, change settings and/or install/update software on a device. The Public Library Service is not responsible for equipment malfunction or the loss or transmission of data as a consequence of staff assistance. It is the user’s responsibility to understand and follow the warranty rules for their device.
