Water and Wastewater Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
What are CEUs?
Operator certificates must be renewed every four years. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are required for renewal, and proof of completion is required. CEU requirements are based upon the certification class. It is the certificate holder's responsibility to keep any certification or documentation that is provided when completing a CEU.
CEUs are required as follows:
- Class I: 2.4 CEUs
- Class II: 2.4 CEUs
- Class III: 4.8 CEUs
- Class IV: 4.8 CEUs
One CEU is equal to 10 contact hours of participation in a department approved continuing education event under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. The department requires that an operator gain the majority of their CEUs in core subject areas relating to their work. Safety training cannot be counted toward more than 25% of the total number of required CEUs.
For example: A Class I operator, who requires 2.4 CEUs, can use no more than 0.6 CEU related to safety training. A Class III operator, who requires 4.8 CEUs, can use no more than 1.2 CEUs related to safety training.
If an operator is certified in water, the majority of the remaining CEUs must be gained in the field of water. If an operator is certified in wastewater, the majority of the remaining CEUs must be gained in the field of wastewater. If an operator is certified in both water and wastewater, CEUs must be gained from both fields.
